Sylar is a serial killer. Standard psychopath, really. He believes that by killing people he is living out an evolutionary imperative to be the most advanced human on the planet, as his powers allow him to absorb the powers of the people he kills (Oh, and did I mention he eats brains, too?) Mostly, though, he's just desperate to be different, to be SPECIAL, and while he touts the evolutionary imperative line, he enjoys the power inherent in taking a life.
